Athletics Facility Project

We are building healthy bodies and healthy minds.

The full spectrum of recreation, wellness, and varsity sports programming will be enhanced by the transformation of the Patrick-Forbush-Gutterson Athletic Complex. The facilities will inspire our young student-athletes to greatness, and help us recruit top talent for our Division I teams. And they also will create a friendly and welcoming environment for players, fans and the hundreds of students, faculty and staff who will use them every day.

The wait is over!

Tarrant Center

Tarrant Center

Thanks to the generosity of Rich and Deb Tarrant--philanthropists and basketball lovers--a new event center that will be home to UVM’s men’s and women’s basketball programs, and will also host a variety of academic, social, cultural, and entertainment programming. The Tarrants' December 2018 gift of $15 million is the largest capital gift ever given to UVM and an extraordinary investment in the University, its students, and the local community. The new event center will be named the “Tarrant Center” in recognition of their generous gift.

We are building for the future.

The barrel-vaulted and beloved Gutterson Fieldhouse and Patrick Gymnasium were built in 1963, when UVM’s student population was 3,500. Since these facilities opened more than a half-century ago, the University of Vermont has achieved great success with its exceptional teams and student recreation programs, but the physical structures have not kept pace. Our current student body, which now exceeds 13,000, deserves a modern space that benefits everyone.

Competitive excellence is a core tenet to the student-athlete experience, both on and off the playing surface. While “the Gut” remains one of college hockey’s most iconic rinks and routinely appears on the “must-visit” lists of hockey fans, the off-ice experience for players and spectators is vintage 1960s. Catamount basketball teams have been competing at exceptionally high levels despite playing on a home court that is often described as an oversized high school gym. The experience for other varsity athletes, and for student recreation users, also is lacking as they share cramped and crowded fitness and training facilities.

All of the successes of UVM teams and campus recreation have been accomplished against this backdrop of aging and inadequate space.

How much further can we go with a high-quality facility perfectly suited to the athletic, academic, social and community needs of our Catamount Nation? Now, we need your help to realize this potential. Together, we can succeed in constructing right-size and flexible facilities that will benefit the entire campus, surrounding community, state of Vermont and the region.

We Are Elevating Recreation

The transformation of the Patrick-Forbush-Gutterson Athletic Complex will feature dramatic upgrades and a five-fold increase in the space dedicated to non-varsity use that will become the hub for health, wellness and fitness for the entire campus. This space also will become the academic and social interface of the facility, with classrooms and study areas intermixed with lounges to foster interaction.

We Are Building Champions

This project will create interconnected facilities for hockey and basketball, preserving and enhancing the venerable Gutterson Fieldhouse while providing a properly-sized events center to house Catamount basketball games as well as academic, social, cultural and entertainment programming. Newly constructed shared space will link the Gut with the new Tarrant Center on three different levels, and will include spacious new concourses with restrooms and concessions, simplified circulation and a well-appointed Victory Club room featuring views on both sides to watch hockey and basketball games.
