Eugene '50, HON'98 and Joan Kalkin HON'98
2018
Few names are as synonymous with vision, generosity, and devotion to the University of Vermont as Eugene '50, HON'98 and Joan Kalkin HON'98. Together, they embodied the spirit of philanthropy and leadership that has shaped UVM.
Aptly described as "the patron saint of the university," Eugene devoted decades of service to UVM at the highest levels. He was a member of the Board of Trustees from 1986 to 1992, served on advisory boards for the Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Grossman School of Business, and was the founding chair of the UVM Foundation Board of Directors. His steady leadership helped set the standard for what it means to give back with both heart and purpose.
Eugene's entrepreneurial spirit and innovative thinking extended far beyond UVM. As founder of Linens 'n Things, he revolutionized the retail industry by introducing creative merchandising strategies that turned a small startup into one of the nation's most successful specialty retailers. Yet, despite his professional success, Eugene's greatest pride lay in using his talents and resources to strengthen his alma mater.
In 1986, he led the fundraising campaign to build a new home for the School of Business Administration - now the Grossman School of Business - making a transformational personal gift of $1.3 million to bring the project to life. Kalkin Hall, named in his honor, stands as a lasting symbol of his belief in the power of education and his love for the university that shaped his life.
Together, Eugene and Joan sustained a deep and abiding commitment to UVM, supporting initiatives across campus that advanced the arts, humanities, business, and student well-being. Their philanthropy enriched the Lattie Coor Endowment for the Humanities, the Arts and Sciences Complex, the Richard A. Dennis University Professorship, the H. Lawrence McCrorey Multicultural Library Collection and Gallery Fund, and the Catamount Recovery Fund. Their support of the Fleming Museum elevated UVM's visual arts program, and the Eugene and Joan Kalkin Retailing Initiative continues to provide transformative learning opportunities for business students pursuing careers in retailing.
Both Eugene and Joan received honorary Doctor of Laws degrees from UVM in 1998. Eugene was also honored with the university's Legacy of Leadership Award and the Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award. In 2018, the UVM Foundation proudly established its most prestigious honor - the Eugene and Joan Kalkin Lifetime Distinguished Leadership Award - in recognition of their exceptional contributions. Fittingly, the Kalkins were the inaugural recipients.
