Nora D. Volkow, M.D., is Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). A pioneer in brain imaging, Dr. Volkow revealed addiction as a brain disorder through her work, showing how dopamine system changes impair reward and self-control. Her research also advanced understanding of obesity, ADHD, and aging. Born in Mexico, Volkow earned her M.D. from the National University of Mexico and trained at NYU. She is the director of the world’s largest funder of research on drug use and addiction, author of nearly 1,000 publications, member of the National Academy of Medicine, and recipient of numerous international awards.

Presented by the Osher Center for Integrative Health at UVM as part of the Laura Mann Integrative Healthcare Lecture Series, this special event is hosted during Psychiatry Grand Grounds, in conjunction with The Robert D. Join the UVM Water Resources Institute (WRI) at the Jericho Research Forest to explore the institute's weather monitoring infrastructure. Drop in to learn about the Vermont Mesonet—a statewide network of automated weather stations providing real-time, localized data—and the Summit to Shore network—a smaller scale network focused on snowmelt flood forecasting. Discover how these networks support flood resiliency, agriculture, utility management, and winter tourism across Vermont. Participants will tour an active station and see how real-time meteorological data is collected and reported.

The Community News Service is a student-powered, professionally-edited reporting program providing news coverage to Vermont media partners. Focused on local and hyper-local news, our students build journalistic skills while becoming more engaged citizens.

Led by Courtney Lamdin, former reporter for Seven Days, and Scott Finn, former CEO of Vermont Public, UVM students write for media platforms across the state, covering a wide range of topics while gaining professional reporting experience. In close partnership with UVM's Center for Community News, CNS utilizes Vermont's small, close-knit communities as laboratories for learning, providing insights and practices used by universities and colleges nationwide. Established in 2013 in honor of Mark J. Zwynenburg '81, the Zwynenburg Professorship supports excellence in research and teaching of financial history in the Department of Economics at the University of Vermont. Amidst the noise and confusion, is there room to find each other and connect? How do we strive to find communication, quiet, and peace? What is there beyond the noise – is there only “blah”?

We first heard the Tesla at a classical brunch concert in New York, and their playing filled the room with astonishing power and grace. Their name honors Nikola Tesla, the visionary scientist and inventor, and much like their namesake, the quartet is known for its forward-thinking and original approach to the chamber music canon. They have been together for 18 years, meeting as students at Juilliard, have won major prestigious competitions, and perform in the world’s greatest halls. For us, they will perform Haydn: String Quartet in F# minor, Op.50 No.4; Bacewicz: Quartet No. 6; and Schumann: String Quartet in A major. Visit the Senior Experience in Engineering Design (SEED) Lab to see examples of how UVM 4th-year mechanical and electrical engineering students are collaborating directly with local companies to solve engineering challenges. In this 2-semester capstone course, students learn about engineering design, teamwork, research, fabrication, testing, communication, and project management while working on industry-sponsored projects. Companies gain access to creative students to bring fresh ideas to an important problem, and students gain real-world experience that prepares them for life after UVM. Now in its 20^th year, over 2000 SEED students have completed over 500 projects for more than 150 companies and organizations. The showcase will be led by SEED Program Director Keith Epstein and SEED students.

A Tribute to David Huddle

Readings from Huddle’s poetry and prose will be followed by a coffee reception. This is the first event in the English’s department's Bicentennial celebration, honoring its history as the oldest English department in America.
