Mutlay Sayan, B.A.’11, M.D.’16, is a radiation oncologist at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute/Brigham and Women’s Hospital and an Assistant Professor of Radiation Oncology at Harvard Medical School. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in economics and chemistry from the University of Vermont in 2011, followed by his medical degree from the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine in 2016. He completed his internship in internal medicine at the University of Vermont Medical Center and his radiation oncology residency at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, where he served as chief resident.

Dr. Sayan specializes in the treatment of patients with prostate cancer, with a research focus on improving personalized treatment selection through clinical risk factors, genomic biomarkers, digital pathology, and artificial intelligence. His work has helped define which patients may benefit most from treatment intensification, including pelvic lymph node radiotherapy and combined-modality therapy. He has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and has presented his work nationally and internationally.

Dr. Sayan serves in several national leadership roles, including on the American Urological Association Advanced Prostate Cancer Guideline Committee, the NRG Oncology Genitourinary Cancer Committee, the American Radium Society Genitourinary Cancer Committee, and the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer Prostate Cancer Quality Measure Working Group. He also serves as Translational Science Chair for the national phase III PROSTATE-IQ trial, which is evaluating personalized treatment approaches for patients receiving postoperative radiotherapy for prostate cancer.

In addition to his clinical and research work, Dr. Sayan is deeply committed to mentorship, education, and global health. He has mentored numerous medical students, residents, and early-career researchers, many of whom have published first-author manuscripts under his guidance. His prior work has also focused on improving cancer awareness and access to care among refugee and underserved communities. His honors include the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Gold Humanism Award, the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award, the STAT Wunderkind Award, the Jay Harris Junior Faculty Research Award from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and the 2025 Brigham and Women’s Hospital Faculty Mentor Award.
