About the Namesake and Fund
Alex and Bobbi Sobel established the Lara Sobel Memorial Scholarship for MSW students to honor their daughter Lara Sobel, whose important contributions to the field of social work and tragic death in 2016 have been remembered through this scholarship. The Sobel Scholarship has supported the education of numerous MSW students at UVM.
Bobbi Sobel passed away on November 23, 2023, following her courageous battle with a series of significant health incidents. Bobbi had a rich and impactful career as a teacher, mother, grandmother, partner, and community member who cared deeply about the education and welfare of all children, youth, and families.
Additional information
Lara Sobel graduated from UVM with a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Political Science in 1989 and also attained her Masters in Social Work from the University of Vermont in 2002. From 2002 until her death in 2015, Lara worked for the State of Vermont Department of Children and Families as a case worker advocating for Vermont’s most vulnerable children.
