About the Namesake and Fund
Lucienne (Lucie) Dean Montgomery, UVM Class of 2015, was tragically killed on May 2, 2020 when she lost control of her motorcycle. A true tragedy. And yet, three years later, hope has emerged from this tragedy.
Through the collective generosity of hundreds of donors, including Lucie’s family, friends, and classmates, there is a new permanent scholarship that honors Lucie’s memory.
A scholarship that will benefit nursing students at UVM in perpetuity – and those students will carry on Lucie’s legacy of caring for others, clinical leadership, dogged determination, unending positivity, confidence, and interminable generosity.
Additional information
Just a few days after Lucie's tragic accident, her family was already thinking about how to bring her light to others. How to create hope from tragedy. Lucie's family decided to establish a permanently endowed scholarship at UVM's College of Nursing and Health Sciences. Not only did Lucie have many close friends from her time at UVM, she also received an exceptional education in the Nursing Program. UVM was a special place for Lucie.
The idea of helping other students from New England become nurses at UVM was a small way that Lucie's family and friends could keep her legacy alive, while doing good for generations to come.
And those who loved Lucie came through in a big way. Over the next few years, more than 200 people donated $30,000 to fund the scholarship in Lucie's memory. The first scholarship recipient was awarded in 2024 and the scholarship will be awarded annually in perpetuity.
