About the Namesake and Fund
For four decades, Dr. Katharine G. Shepherd has devoted her career to advancing educational opportunity, inclusion, research, and community engagement at the University of Vermont. A two-time UVM graduate and lifelong educator, Katie has served the university in numerous roles since joining the faculty in 1986, including Researcher, Program Coordinator, Associate Dean, and Dean of the College of Education and Social Services.
A nationally respected scholar in special education and inclusive practices, Katie has championed partnerships among educators, families, schools, and communities to improve outcomes for learners of all ages. Her research and leadership have helped shape educational policy and practice in Vermont and beyond, while her mentorship has inspired generations of students, faculty, and professionals.
As Dean, Katie has strengthened academic programs, expanded opportunities for students and researchers, and guided the college through a period of innovation and growth. Her collaborative leadership, unwavering commitment to excellence, and deep belief in the power of education have left a lasting mark on the college, the university, and the communities it serves.

The Dr. Katharine G. Shepherd Dean's Fund was established by members of the College of Education and Social Services Board of Advisors, together with Katie's colleagues, friends, and family, to honor her remarkable legacy at the University of Vermont.
Designed to support the college's highest priorities, the fund provides flexible resources that can be directed where they are needed most. This flexibility allows the college to respond to emerging opportunities, invest in innovative initiatives, support students and faculty, strengthen research and scholarship, and advance the college's mission of serving schools, organizations, and communities throughout Vermont and beyond.
