About the Namesake and Fund
Timothy J. Chant ’89 played soccer for UVM during the 1984 and 1985 seasons. In 1985, he was a captain and was voted Most Valuable Player by his teammates. Ron McEachen, whose first year at Vermont was 1985, asked Timmy to remain on as an Assistant Coach the following year. Timmy became an even greater part of the UVM Men’s Soccer program in the ensuing years, still serving as Assistant Coach for the 1989 UVM run to the NCAA quarterfinals. He continued to coach the following year when Vermont was defeated by Dartmouth in the first round of the NCAAs in 1990.
After leaving Vermont, Timmy moved to Rhode Island, where he started a family and became an indelible part of the Westwood Public Schools in Massachusetts as a teacher, coach, and administrator.
Having touched so many lives with his sense of humor, work ethic, and personality in Vermont, he continued to do so both in Rhode Island and with the people he served in Massachusetts.
Sadly, Timmy passed away on 25 February 2024. He was not able to enjoy with his former teammates, alumni, and friends the electrifying campaign in 2024 when Vermont captured the NCAA National Championship in Cary, North Carolina. At the discretion of the head coach, this immediate use fund is not only to honor Timmy but is also meant to provide a vehicle through which he can continue to help UVM Men’s Soccer achieve success in the decades to come. Beneath all of his approachability, there was great depth to Timmy’s personality and a gravitas that would draw people in and help him to create deep and lasting friendships that lasted decades. It is those friendships that have inspired the creation of The Timmy Chant Memorial Soccer Fund.

He brought that same passion, loyalty, and energy to every part of his life. Beyond those closest relationships, the legacy Tim cherished most was as an alumnus of the University of Vermont Men’s Soccer program. It was more than a team to him—it was a community and a source of pride that he carried with him always. The Timmy Chant Memorial Soccer Fund ensures that Tim’s spirit lives on—through the game and the University he loved, and the people who continue to carry it forward. I couldn’t imagine a more fitting tribute.”
