Karl Fessenden '85

Karl Fessenden has built a distinguished career as a senior operating executive in the aviation, power, energy, and construction industries.

With more than 35 years of leadership experience in complex global businesses, he has guided major companies through transformation and growth. After two decades in senior roles at General Electric's Aviation and Power Generation businesses, Karl went on to lead CHC Helicopter as President and CEO and later served as President and COO of MB Aerospace.

In 2020, he became President and CEO of BrandSafway, one of the largest specialty contractors in the world, providing industrial and infrastructure solutions through 360 locations in 27 countries and employing more than 40,000 people. Karl earned a Bachelor of Science in 1985 from UVM's College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences (CEMS) and later a master's degree in management from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Karl has demonstrated exceptional leadership and generosity at UVM, serving for a decade on the CEMS Board of Advisors, including five years as chair. During his tenure, he worked to put students at the center of the board's efforts, connecting them with professional opportunities through internships, networking, and career programming.

He and his wife, Mary, established the Karl and Mary Fessenden Professorship in Biomedical Engineering, a transformative investment in faculty excellence. Karl now serves as a member of the UVM Foundation Leadership Council. Through both his career accomplishments and steadfast commitment to his alma mater, Karl has distinguished himself as a visionary leader and grateful alumnus. Karl and Mary live in Fort Thomas, Kentucky and are enjoying their time following Karl's recent retirement.

Since 1958, the Distinguished Service Award has been awarded to dynamic and purposeful volunteer leaders whose loyal, unselfish, and consistent service to the University of Vermont has enhanced the reputation and furthered the mission of the University.
